The research task for the case is to investigate what services should and could be offered by Laurea in the Active Life Village campus in Otaniemi.

The role and responsibility of University of Applied Sciences in local innovation is to actively cooperate with city of Espoo and companies in order to develop new ways for offering health care and social welfare services to people (mainly elderly).

Laurea uses its own developed operating model, Learning by Developing (LbD). The LbD model defines a learning environment, which utilizes internal and external networks and is in constant interaction with the working life. The idea of LbD is to provide the learning setting and learning way to investigate, create and evaluate real challenges of clients and service providers in health care and social welfare field.

The innovative services can be planned and implemented by students at Laurea. These are Health Care, Social Welfare, Physiotherapy, and Business Bachelor students but also Master of Health Care students. The intension is to attract real clients, professionals, and entrepreneurs into collaboration with these students.

In the future Laurea plans to participate in ‘The Design Capital 2012’ events by creating a new setting within the campus (e.g. building a ‘Showroom’ and ‘FabLab’ in the ALV campus. The ‘FabLab’ can mean as a workspace in which collaborations and ideas are initiated. This way clients and companies are able to participate actively in creation of wellbeing services and health care innovations. This entire concept, when developed further, can function as a living lab for promoting SMEs innovation activities and matching students and teachers with SMEs.
