Automobile Accidents-why on an increase?

If you live in a developed country you are likely to be injured in a traffic accident at least once in ‎your lifetime.‎

Worldwide reports state that there are more than half a million traffic accidents each year mostly caused by but not limited to old age and drowsiness or sleep driving. ‎

The U.S. magazine, Car & Travel -reported that people who are over 70 years of age make up ‎‎9 % of that countrys population and cause upto 13% of almost all traffic fatalities on US roads. Even though older drivers are considered the most ‎experienced drivers they are however not immune to the danger of vehicle collisions ‎as a matter of fact they become more vulnerable as they get older. ‎

On the other hand, experts say that drowsy drivers may be as dangerous as drunk drivers and ‎reports indicate that drowsiness causes an increase in the number of automobile accidents, for ‎instance every year 1 out of every 12 motorists in Norway were reported falling asleep whilst ‎driving and in South Africa driver fatigue caused up to one third of all vehicular collisions and ‎reports from other countries revealed that fatigue is affecting drivers everywhere on an increasingly ‎worrisome rate. ‎

Research question: How can we prevent automobile accidents? ‎

Having enough sleep before driving is very important as an average person needs at least 9 hours of sleep every night of which failure to which they might develop what is known as sleep debt. Even sleeping 30 or 40 minutes less each night might result into a 4 hour sleep debt by the end of the week and this is just enough to cause sleepiness whilst driving.

When you feel drowsy it is highly advisable not to drive at all as this might put you and other road users in danger and popular remedies such as drinking caffeine, opening the window, chewing gum or eating something spicy will not keep you awake as these so called remedies do not address the root problem. What you need is sleep. so when driving on a long distance it’s important that you have enough sleep before driving and planning ahead of time and taking regular naps at specific intervals on a long journey might delay your arrival for a few minutes but extend your life and save you from insurance and medical bills etc.

Sometimes it’s important to reduce the time we spend behind the wheel especially at night and for older drivers it’s important to have regular eye checkups and be cautious at all times during driving. Honestly speaking at some point in our lives it’s in everybody’s best interests to just stop driving as this is a protection for us and others on the road.
