TOURIST WHO TRAVEL TO FINLAND TEND TO STAY IN THE BIG CITIES LIKE HELSINKI AND TAMPERE

Tourism is increasing in Finland but the majority of tourists travelling to Finland stay in Helsinki, Tampere, Turku or Rovaniemi. In the summer of 2007 64% of tourists from the United States announced Helsinki as their only travel destination. We think that most things in Finland focus in the capital so the rest of Finland should benefit from the growing tourism economy.
Growing tourism would increase employment in the smaller cities and regions of Finland. As jobs are more difficult to find in these areas as it is. More jobs would bring more inhabitants and better services and the whole region infrastructure would benefit from this.
Today the money that tourists leave to a country focus on certain areas. These areas can then develop their services, accommodation, infrastructure and economy. Smaller cities have limited recourses to even establish any tourists services. This creates a vicious cycle when small regions can’t afford to develop their services for tourists but tourists won’t travel to the regions because of the lack of services.
The biggest problem is perhaps that travelling around Finland can be quite expensive, because of the long distance between places. Travelling with the newer trains can cost quite much so tourists just choose to stay in one place.
Maybe the biggest issue why tourists don’t travel around Finland is that people just don’t know about all the possibilities Finland has to offer in general. The coverage of Finland in foreign travel agencies is very low. Overall people don’t know a lot about the services, events and places Finland has to offer and Finland isn’t considered in general as a very popular travel destination.
