Negative observations of Tampere
Looking from a tourist’s point of view we found a few negative things in Tampere that should be considered when developing the city as a tourist attraction.
1. The tourists can’t find the Tourist Information easily. No signs outside of the buildings (or if there is, only very small ones) and the map in front of the railway station is old, it shows the old place of the Tourist Information. There are also a few other of those big maps in the centre. From 2 out of three maps one couldn’t locate the place they were and in all of them the Tourist Information was shown to be in its old place near Sokos Hotel Ilves.
2. Most of the signs are just in Finnish or Swedish, or maybe in English. There should be more signs with pictures or drawings, so that even those who don’t speak English could understand them.
3. Many times public facilities’ names are missing, or at least there’s no name in English. It is difficult to recognize which building is which, when they are next to each other. For example, next to the market place there are lot of public buildings, but it might be difficult for the tourists to recognize them.
4. Public buildings (like libraries, churches) have usually only a very small and not very clear sign of the opening hours. Lot of tourists would like to visit the churches of Tampere, but it’s difficult, because they have a really short opening hours.
5. In the Tourist Office there aren’t good opportunities for the tourists to sit down or rest a bit or have refreshments. No chairs or tables, where the tourists could sit for a while and check the map and sights of Tampere. There is no toilet for the tourist information visitors’ use only.
6. There aren’t organised tourist sight-seeing (rubberneck) busses. The tourists, who would like to see the city without walking, have no opportunity to catch the sight-seeing bus and listen to the history of Tampere during the trip.
7. No offers for tourists on the bus. No tourist day or week tickets, or if there are, tourist never get information about these offers. No sign at the busstops.
