HONOR CRIMES

In many lands today there are crimes that are done for the protection of the family name in society and ‎community. ‎

In some lands there are crimes that are committed against family members on the basis that they have ‎brought shame to the family, and these crimes are called honor killings.

This means that a family member ‎will literally kill his brother or sister and parents can kill their children because they have brought dishonor ‎to the family and thus they want to regain the family’s status in society. ‎

So in male dominant societies it is common for males to target women who refuse to enter an arranged ‎marriage, being a victim of sexual assault, seeking divorce or who allegedly commit adultery. The ‎perception here is that a woman has behaved in a way that has brought dishonors, shame or disrespect ‎to the family and this is enough evidence to trigger an attack on her life.‎

In 2002 it was estimated that 245 women and 137 men were killed in Pakistan and over 80 women in Iraq ‎committed suicide. These sorts of crimes also happen amongst migrant families in many parts of the ‎world including Europe and America.‎
