Looking beyond the South Africa 2010
The platform has been set for corporate and general business entrepreneurs in Africa to roll.
The Federation International Football Association (FIFA) world cup is an international association of football tournament competed by men’s national teams of countries belonging to FIFA. It is organised once in every four years involving thirty-five national teams. The countdown is on for the 2010 world cup to be staged in South Africa. Sooner than later all the eyes of the rest of the world would be focused on the continent of Africa, precisely the Republic of South Africa. Many football enthusiasts will be enplaning to South Africa to witness this grandiose event. In the eyes of the entrepreneur, this comes along with concomitant opportunities for people within the African continent. According to Jacob Zuma, the president of the Republic of South Africa in an interview with BBC, there is an opportunity to promote foreign investment, tourism, and trade. Economic analysts estimate that the world cup will catapult about $2billion for South Africa’s tourism industry, $1,1billion for retailers of goods and services.
African countries like Kenya and Nigeria are seizing this opportunity by planning to showcase their countries alongside the tournament to attract direct foreign investment into their respective countries (Sani Lulu, Head of Nigerian Football Association-AFP News). The pace set by Nigeria and Kenya is a clarion call for other African countries to follow suit. The question therefore is that do other African nations and indigenous entreprenuers have the “eagle eye” as Nigeria and Kenya to look beyond the tournament and grab the opportunities?
