Africa is on course

Africa is on course.......... “Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see”

In the past all the news that the rest of the world heard about Africa were poverty, HIV pandemic, malaria, ethnic conflicts, human trafficking, and other social problems. Lo and behold, there has been a paradigm shift where the rest of the world now views the African continent as fertile grounds for investment. Within the context of natural resources and investments, the continent is being regarded as an oasis in a dessert land where animals throng to search for fresh waters. Many recent developments that are unfolding attest to this fact.

In an article published by René Dassié in Afrik.com on the 3rd of June 2010, Renault a French car manufacturing company will be opening a new manufacturing unit in the northern Moroccan city of Tangiers-Méditerranée, and at the same time has also been negotiating with the Algerian government since February in order to establish itself on the Algerian territory. Facing strong competition on the international market, Renault thought it wise to settled on the on the Africa continent where it can expand capacity with ease through access to cheap labour, and tax benefits.

Digressing from the issue of car manufacturing, with the existing Africa oil reserves and new discoveries in Ghana, and Zambia, the US is strategically shifting the bulk of its oil imports away from the Middle East. According to economic analysts, in the year 2005, the US imported more oil from Africa than from the Middle East, and more from the Gulf of Guinea than from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait combined (Ben O. A, modernghananews.com). Africa is having high quality oil reserves and from empirical scientific findings the oil has low sulphur content that ease the catalytic crackering process during production.

As it was said by Martin Luther King, Jr., “Everything that we see is a shadow cast by that which we do not see”, meaning all the positive developments that are unfolding today in the African continent are a shadow of great things that will be happening in the future.

Opportunity: High employment creation by investors for locals, positive reputation(image) for the African continent

Threat: Foreign companies taking advantage of the cheap labour,
