Suntan lotion is a risk

Suntan lotions could raise the risk of getting skin cancer, experts say. Therefore suntan lotions give sun worshippers a false sense of security.

Suntan lotion shields your skin from the Sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation. By absorbing and reflecting UVA and UVB rays, suntan lotion helps protect you against skin cancer. For sun lovers this may come as a surprise, but despite suntan lotions benefits, it may cause health problems, claims researchers and cancer organizations. (Cancer Society of Finland, 2010). Although suntan lotions help prevent sunburn, lotions fail to block out the harmful ultraviolet rays which can cause the disease.

We shouldn’t rely on suntan lotions alone, because they give a false sense of security. Just because you’re not burning you spend longer time in the sun and get more UVA damage. UVA penetrates the skin most deeply and can suppress the immune system and damage cells.

Present suntan lotions protect pretty good from UVB-radiation, but the protection is not equally good against crumpled skin and UVA-radiation. When choosing suntan lotion you need to make sure that the lotion protects from both UV-radiation.

Suntan lotions contain one or several substances that filter and reflect UV-radiation. Suntan lotions usually prevent burning UVB-radiation to skin more effectively.

The only ways to truly protect the skin are staying in the shade at the hottest times of the day or by covering up with hats and T-shirts.
