Psychological control of depression and other measures without medication

There are a lot of negative effects caused by the antidepressant pills administered to depressed patients...

Nowadays, especially in Finland, people who have been diagnosed to be having depression are easily placed under medication without consideration for other means that depression can be treated. There are a lot of negative effects caused by the antidepressant pills administered to depressed patients.

At the moment, medical practitioners do not have a full understanding about how antidepressants and depression affect the brain. Even the drug companies admit that they do not completely know how the drugs work. Doctors do not really have a choice when prescribing antidepressants for their patients. They often base their prescriptions on the different side effects various medication can cause. So, patients are given pills that would not cause too much arm to them. (http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/dlp/treating-depression/side-effects-of-antidepressants/)

The general side effects of depression medication include: dry mouth, urinary retention, blurred vision, constipation, sedation (can interfere with driving or operating machinery) and sleep disruption. Other effect include: weight gain headache, nausea, gastrointestinal disturbance/diarrhea, abdominal pain, inability to achieve an erection, inability to achieve an orgasm (men and women), loss of libido, agitation and anxiety. However, pregnant women under certain depression medication have very high risk during and after childbearing.

Other means such as counseling, physical therapy and other exercises should be adopted more for the control of depression instead of administering antidepressant medicines. Also, this alternative treatment of depression should further be developed to eliminate any negative effect it may have on patients. So, more research should be conducted to further develop other methods of controlling and treating depression without medication.

Research question: How can depression be controlled and treated without the use of antidepressant pills?
